What is agentic AI? Meaning and explanation

In classic AI applications, the model recognises or predicts something, after which a person takes the next step. Agentic AI goes further: an AI agent receives a goal, plans the required steps, uses systems and data to carry them out and evaluates the result. Crucially, the agent works within boundaries that people define, and escalates what falls outside them.

For a firm, agentic AI means that not only recognising work but also completing it can be automated. Think of an invoice that is reviewed and booked, a missing receipt requested from the client and a payment that is matched. The employee's role shifts to setting boundaries and assessing exceptions. Explainability and traceability are prerequisites.
