What is partial payment? Meaning and explanation
A partial payment (deelbetaling) is a payment that settles only part of an invoice, leaving the remainder open until it is paid or offset.
Definition
A partial payment (deelbetaling) is a payment that settles only part of an invoice, leaving the remainder open until it is paid or offset.
Also known as: Deelbetaling, Partial payment, Gedeeltelijke betaling
A partial payment occurs when a customer pays less than the invoice amount. That can be deliberate, as with a payment arrangement or a down payment, or unintended, as with a disputed amount or a deducted early payment discount. In the books, the payment is linked to the invoice, but the remainder stays visible as an open item.
For a firm, partial payments make reconciliation harder. The amount on the bank statement does not correspond to an invoice, so simple matching on amount fails. If partial payments are not processed correctly, the result is incorrect open items, wrong reminders and differences in receivables or payables that later have to be sorted out with the client.
Autoboeker recognises and processes partial payments in bank matching for Exact Online, Twinfield and SnelStart. Payment arrangements and recurring payments are recognised too. Deviating payments are flagged instead of silently reconciled, so you can see where a remainder is still open. Bank matching is not available for e-Boekhouden.
Example
An invoice of 3,000 euros is paid in three instalments of 1,000 euros. Each instalment is linked to the same invoice, which is only fully reconciled after the third payment.
